A carer from Stockport has won a much sought after award at the Great North West Care Awards.
Doreen Roberts, from High Lane, won the Unpaid Carers Award. Doreen has over 10 year’s experience of helping to improve support for carers of people with mental health issues.
Doreen is also a director of All Together Positive, a ‘not for profit’ social enterprise who, along with Stockport MIND, co-manage the new Stockport Council funded Mental Health Prevention & Personalisation Service for people in the Stockport area.
Councillor Daniel Hawthorne, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Adult Care Services, said: “I would like to congratulate Doreen on this thoroughly deserved award. As well as training carers on how to cope better with their caring role, she has also helped give carers a local voice and change the understanding of health and social care professionals about supporting carers.”
Doreen, said: “Caring for others has greatly enriched my life. I have had a lifetime of caring for people, including my husband who has Alzheimer’s, my mother who was Bi-polar and my son who has Schizophrenia. I am delighted to be honoured in this way but am accepting this award on behalf of the many thousands of unpaid carers who look after family, friends or neighbours.”
Doreen has now been shortlisted for the national finals of the British Care Awards, which will take place early next year.
