
Since opening in May last year, Stockroom has established itself as one of Stockport’s most vibrant, creative and welcoming public spaces, welcoming over 100,000 visitors each month.
From the spectacular opening weekend, which attracted thousands of visitors, to the steady flow of people using the space every day, it has become a favourite spot for learning, creativity and community connection. At a time when many high streets are struggling, it has also helped Merseyway record its busiest period in years, contributing to a landmark year for the shopping centre in 2025, with footfall topping 10 million — a 40% year-on-year increase.
Visitors have embraced a diverse and inclusive programme of activities, including children’s storytelling and creative workshops, youth-led gigs, comedy nights, zine-making, inclusive celebrations such as Pride and Windrush Day, and exhibitions by renowned artists including Stan Chow and Casey Orr. Alongside everyday access to a library, resources and services and the opening up of the town’s archives so more people can use them, these activities have helped make Stockroom a joyful and welcoming part of the town centre. Most events are free to attend, ensuring there is always something for everybody to enjoy.
Stockroom has delivered significant social, cultural and educational benefits, and the figures speak for themselves:
- 30,827 books were borrowed or renewed — more than any other library in the borough.
- New library membership rose by 79%.
- Overall book loans increased by 52% compared to Central Library in the town centre
- 2,418 new borrowers signed up and 468 lapsed members returned.
- Borrowing among 8–16-year-olds increased significantly, demonstrating strong impact on literacy and learning.
- 190 events attracted nearly 4,000 participants, the majority free of charge.

“Stockroom has been an incredible success and people have truly taken it to their hearts. Since opening last May, we’ve seen thousands of residents coming through the doors every week, exploring the space, discovering new activities and making it their own.
“Our library service is busier than ever, with huge growth in book loans and new members, and it’s been fantastic to see so many people getting involved in creative and cultural events. Every day, Stockroom is full of energy — families reading together, young people performing in Stockroom Studios, and residents accessing support in a relaxed and welcoming environment. It’s become a place for everyone, shaped by our community, and a real source of pride for Stockport.”
