Stockport is about to shine in a whole new way this February with AMAZE, a free, large-scale projection that brings local stories to life in the heart of the town centre.
Presented by Stockroom, the town centre’s new library and cultural space, AMAZE will transform the lives of everyday Stopfordians into a stunning visual experience on the iconic concrete screen of Merseyway car park between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on both 21st and 22nd Feburary.
The projection is created in collaboration with internationally renowned Illuminos, who are experts in turning buildings and public spaces into immersive, unforgettable visual experiences, blending light, sound, and storytelling. Their work has lit up cities across the UK and beyond, and now Stockport will have its very own large-scale projection.
Stockport’s AMAZE project is built around the stories of local people, gathered in creative workshops with local illustrator Molly O’Donoghue. The result is a projection that is visually spectacular, deeply personal, and rooted in the community.
Cllr Dan Oliver, Stockport Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection, said:
“AMAZE is a celebration of the people of Stockport and the stories that make our community unique. It’s a chance for residents of all ages to come together, share in these moments, and enjoy a spectacular experience in the heart of our town centre. I hope everyone will take the opportunity to see Stockport in a new light and be part of this unforgettable event.”
Molly O’Donoghue, illustrator, said:
“As a creative born and bred in Stockport, it’s a dream to be part of the AMAZE creative team. I’ve loved diving into the stories of local residents, and helping bring their experiences to life in full colour. It genuinely feels like a joy and a privilege to be part of something so meaningful and I can’t wait to see the reactions when we light up Merseyway with Illuminos.”
As part of the AMAZE projection, Stockroom will be open until 8pm on both days, for a modernist inspired free evening of creativity, soundtracked by DJ duo SHIMRISE. Events are all free and include:
- DJ set: SHIMRISE, Saturday 3:30 to 8pm, Sunday 4 to 8pm
- screen printing workshop with Caroline Coates: Saturday and Sunday 4 to 7:30pm. Create your own screen print inspired by Alan Boyson’s iconic Merseyway screen
- Badge Making: Saturday and Sunday 4 to 7:30pm. Take inspiration from the bold shapes Alan Boyson used in his Merseyway screen and make your own modernist button badges. We’ll supply the materials, you bring the ideas!
- Cut & Construct: Saturday and Sunday 3:30 to 7:30pm. A fun, hands-on workshop using pictures of old buildings from Stockport’s market town to create brand new ones.
- Big Shapes, Bold Shapes, led by Take Action Together CIC: Sunday 3:30 to 7.30pm. An architecture-inspired scrap play workshop inviting children and families to explore shape, structure, balance and building through reclaimed materials
- artist talks: Sunday, with Illuminos and Molly O’Donoghue
Stockroom is a vibrant new community space in the heart of Stockport’s Merseyway Shopping Centre. Since opening in May 2025, it’s quickly become a favourite spot for learning, creativity, and connecting, with over 100,000 visits each month.
