SAFETY FIRST AT CHRISTMAS Fire safety is being promoted by the Safer Stockport Partnership (SSP) to help local residents to enjoy a problem-free festive season by protecting themselves and their property.
The SSP struck a hot deal with Heaton Moor-based Easy Access Self Storage who joined Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service to promote safety messages.
As well as storage, Easy Access Self Storage provides Christmas trees, and buying a tree from them, you will receive information on how to stay safe over Christmas.
Residents can also ask for a free Home Safety Check. Posters warning of the dangers of cooking whilst drunk are being displayed in local licenced premises.
The Christmas tree message is one of ‘12 Top Tips on how to have a Safe Winter’, crime reduction information to help to protect residents from vehicle crime and burglary, plus warnings about the risks of drinking alcohol before cooking or driving, are also included.
The key messages will be communicated to local people in shopping centres, car parks and colleges throughout November and December. For more information about the campaign, go to www.saferstockport.org.uk or Facebook www.facebook.com/StockportMBC and Twitter @StockportMBC or phone 0161 474 3143.
Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member for Supporting Communities, said: “The initiative aims to continue the eight year trend of crime reduction in Stockport by promoting key messages which help residents protect themselves and their property from crime over the busy Christmas and New Year period.
“We are starting with fire safety and the need, for example, for all householders to have a working smoke alarm in their properties, and to avoid using candles for light.”
Bernard Bailey, owner of Easy Access Self Storage, added: “We are very keen to do anything we can to ensure that all our customers have a safe and happy Christmas. It can be a hectic time of year for families and also for the emergency services.
“If this initiative reminds our customers of the fire risks whilst in the process of delivering trees to their homes and helps improve safety, then my company is more than happy to give this our full support.”
