Residents urged to help protect green spaces from fires

Stockport Council is urging residents to take extra care when enjoying parks and open spaces across the borough this summer following moorland fires in the region.

The recent hot and dry weather has increased the risk of fires spreading quickly, with incidents across the region highlighting the devastating impact they can have on wildlife, natural habitats, communities and emergency services.

To help protect our local green spaces, Stockport Council is reminding residents that disposable BBQs, fire pits, open flames, fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted in the borough’s parks and open spaces.

Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services at Stockport Council, said:

“The recent moorland fires have shown just how quickly a small flame can become a major incident, causing serious damage to wildlife, habitats and the environment.

“We want everyone to enjoy Stockport’s fantastic parks and green spaces this summer, but we are asking residents to do so responsibly. Please do not use disposable BBQs, fire pits, fireworks or sky lanterns in our parks and open spaces.

“By taking a few simple precautions, we can all play our part in protecting these valuable community spaces and helping to reduce the risk of fires across the borough.”

Residents are also encouraged to dispose of litter responsibly, take care when smoking outdoors and report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.
