Manchester Airport has begun the procurement process for the delivery of a £60 million pier to add further capacity for flights from Terminal 2.
The work forms part of phase two of airports redevelopment of the terminal, which reopened in July 2021 following the coronavirus pandemic after a significant refurbishment. The revamped terminal is the centrepiece of the airport’s wider £1 billion transformation programme.
The new three-storey pier will add an additional 10 departure gates for aircraft and fixed link-bridge. The ground floor will house plant and storage space, with the first floor for arrivals and second floor for departures.
The new pier is expected to take around 20 months to complete, with work expected to begin in the second quarter of 2023, completing by the end of the following year.
The airport has also put out to tender £6 million of structural steelworks on the Terminal 2 site in preparation for construction of the new pier. Work will involve the removal of structural steel from the site, as well as installation and strengthening works over a period of 36 months.
