Poundland to open in refurbished BHS store Saturday 3rd August

Poundland will open at 9am on Saturday 3rd August in the refurbished former BHS building, marking the latest milestone in Stockport town centre’s £1 billion regeneration.

Poundland moves into one of two retail units created by Stockport Council out of the former BHS store after the council purchased the building in 2019. Asbestos removal on the site began in Autumn 2022, with Robertson Construction beginning the refurbishment in Spring the following year. The discount retailer’s arrival in its new store signals the latest of a series of regeneration projects in the town’s retail centre, including the conversion of disused Merseyway units converted into a new Business Innovation Centre, that sit within the town centre’s wider £1 billion regeneration ambitions.

The 9,000 sq ft store will offer chilled and frozen food, a full range of Pepco clothing for women, men and kids plus Poundland’s new Pepco Home general merchandise ranges, and replace the existing site on Warren Street.

Poundland retail director Alan Smallman said:

“We promised a store the town could be proud of and we’ve worked hard to deliver it.

“With the decline of many of our much-loved department stores over the years, town centres across the country are facing the issue of having large vacant units on their hands.  The opening of Poundland’s new flagship store in our town centre demonstrates a renewed confidence in Stockport and I wish them every success.

“With improved public realm at Merseyway, a new Innovation Centre, as well as a new transport interchange and Stockroom, an exciting new space for creativity, discovery and inspiration, due to open soon,  the town centre is thriving.”

The opening of the new Poundland store follows the introduction of more than 2,000 new product lines across the UK and Ireland which Stockport shoppers will be able to benefit from. It also coincides with the launch of the retailer’s ‘Grand in Your Hand’ promotion that will see 30 of its luckiest customers right across the UK win £1,000 for each of the following 30 days. Thirty customers chosen at random will receive an instant cash prize when they pay at any of the discounter’s 3,000 manned checkouts in any of its 750-plus UK stores.
