Arc at Hat Works is proud to present a new exhibition of vibrant original paintings by emerging artist Ava Reid titled How Do You Know My Name?, opening on Saturday 6 June 2026.
Ava, an artist with Down syndrome and Autism, creates confident, colourful and joyous paintings that celebrate the people, animals, places and everyday moments that bring her happiness. Inspired by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet, Ava’s work uses bold colour, expressive shapes and rhythmic movement to share her unique perspective with the world.
The exhibition will feature a collection of large-scale canvases, reflecting the evolution of Ava’s practice from small beginnings to increasingly ambitious works. Ava says that painting with bright colours helps her feel calm, while her pieces radiate energy and emotion. Ava said:
“I’d like people to feel the joy that I feel when I paint when they see my work.”
Through this exhibition, Ava aims to challenge stereotypes surrounding the creative potential of people with Down syndrome and Autism, establishing herself as a self-funded commercial artist with a distinctive voice.
Ava has been supported in developing her practice by mentor Becca Smith, who said:
“Ava’s work is vibrant and rhythmical, shaped by colour, conversation, movement and the world around her.”

Original paintings plus prints and cards will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition, which is open 10am – 4pm, Thursday to Saturday at Arc, Hat Works, Wellington Road South, Stockport until Saturday 26 September 2026.
