Network Rail warns of rail disruption across the North West as temperatures rise

With the Met Office having issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat across the North West for 24th and 25th June, Network Rail is warning of the disruption the high temperatures will have on train services across the region.

Temperatures could reach up to 36°C and could average in the mid-30s, with the South East of England expected to see the mercury surpass 40°C where a severe red weather warning is place and passengers are being urged to only travel if absolutely necessary.

All railway lines across the North West will remain open, but train operators will run amended timetables to help manage the impact of extreme temperatures on the railway. Passengers should also expect stations and trains to be busier than usual.

For safety reasons, trains will operate at reduced speeds, meaning journeys will take longer and there is a heightened risk of delays, cancellations and last-minute alterations as high temperatures can adversely effect both tracks and overhead power lines. There will be no rail replacement bus services during this period.

Passengers who do need to travel are strongly advised to prepare for the conditions by bringing plenty of water, wearing sunscreen and a hat, and ensuring that they have a back-up plan in case of disruption.

Ross Davies, North West network operations director for Network Rail, said:

“We are asking passengers to check with their train operators or on the National Rail Enquiries website before they travel in the next few days. If you do need to travel, please plan ahead, allow yourself extra time and take precautions where necessary.

“This extremely hot weather will have an impact across the country this week, so look for the latest guidance in your area.”

In Greater Manchester, TfGM is also advising bus and tram passengers to take extra care. TfGM’s Customer and Growth Director, Fran Wilkinson, said:

“Very high temperatures are forecast this week that can affect both people and the transport network.

“We will have staff out to help those who need it, and I would encourage customers to take a few simple steps to stay safe and comfortable while travelling, such as by carrying water, travelling at cooler times of the day and looking out for others.”
