Heaton Chapel’s Littlewoods Butchers has been listed in the Observer as one of the UK’s favourite local shops chosen by chefs and food writers.
Littlewoods Butchers was one of only two butchers to make the list, and Greater Manchester’s only representative. The Observer profile highlighted the shop’s whole-carcass approach to butchery, and its focus on working with local farms to supply prime cuts and more unusual options such as hogget and wild boar.
The family run shop was praised by Manchester-based chef Joe Otway, with Littlewoods supplying his city-centre bistro Higher Ground. The restaurant was recently awarded the Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, with Michelin inspectors noting the quality of produce being cooked in a recent profile.
Butcher and owner, Marcus Wilson, commented:
“We’re really pleased that we’ve been featured in Sunday’s Observer Food Monthly magazine alongside other exceptional food retailers.
“The chefs we work with put a great deal of time into researching the very best produce available, and we’re very lucky to be able to work with them. The cuts and products that we supply to the best restaurants in Manchester and the Northwest are exactly the same as the cuts available to purchase in our little wee butchers shop.”
Recognition for Littlewoods in the Observer Food Monthly supplement follows its shortlisting last year at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) Awards in the Food and Drink Retailer of the Year category, losing out to wine shop Cork of the North in nearby Heaton Moor.
Established in 1964, Littlewoods Butchers supply the public and hospitality trade with local, free range, naturally reared, and traceable meat mainly sourced from the Cheshire plains.
