Stockport Council has listened to people’s views on library opening hours and the Executive will now consider the proposals.
The Council consulted with residents on opening hours at 13 of the borough’s libraries and received over 2,000 responses. The proposals will be considered by the Executive on Tuesday 1st October.
Councillor Mark Weldon, Stockport Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Corporate, Customer and Community Services, said: “We have listened very carefully to the views people have expressed as part of the libraries consultation and I would like to thank everybody who has had their say.
“As a result of the consultation we have reviewed the proposed opening times for all the libraries. Also, all the libraries will be open until 7.00pm at least one week day evening.”
Other proposals for libraries include the following:
Specific requests made by a number of respondents have been considered in the revision of hours.
Library staff in each library will have a discussion with groups who use the library as a meeting venue in the evenings, such as Reading Groups, so that these groups can continue to meet in the library wherever possible.
In addition a fixed facility, replacing the mobile library in Adswood and Bridgehall, is opened in Bridgehall Community Centre.
Councillor Mark Weldon, added: “Over the next two financial years these proposals will contribute to a 0.625million saving for the Council. However, we are still committed to providing the best possible libraries in Stockport with the limited resources at our disposal.”
