A consultation will begin in January 2024 on plans for Stockport 8, a £250 million, 1,200 home development planned for Stockport town centre.
Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) appointed English Cities Fund, a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General and Stockport Exchange developer, Muse, earlier this year to deliver on its plans. Stockport 8 is one of the major developments being brought forward by Stockport MDC as part of plans for the 130 acre Town Centre West area of Stockport to be transformed into a new sustainable and liveable neighbourhood of 4,000 homes, local amenities, green space, commercial property and transport improvements. Other schemes being brought forward includes the new transport interchange, regeneration of Weir Mill and the redevelopment of parts of Stockport College’s campus off Greek Street.
The £250 million Stockport 8 scheme will deliver a diverse mix of up to 1,200 new homes for the people of Stockport, spaces for independent businesses and green spaces to meet, relax and enjoy. Located on land either side of King Street West and next to the railway viaduct the plans will reconnect the site to nearby neighbourhoods and the town centre, bringing life back to what was once a thriving residential neighbourhood under the railway arches.
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair of Stockport MDC said:
“English Cities Fund’s considerable emphasis on a robust and collaborative public consultation and community engagement programme in its proposal for Stockport 8 was one of a number of reasons we knew they were the right partner for the largest site within the regeneration masterplan. That is why this first milestone in the community conversation is a significant one.
“Our ambition for the site and for the wider regeneration district, has always been one that best serves the needs of local people, and this process will enable us to best achieve this ambition, and to move another step closer to building the most sustainable and liveable town centre, not only in the region but in the UK.”
Phil Mayall from the English Cities Fund said:
“This will be a connected, fully walkable neighbourhood with a diverse mix of homes, places for local businesses to thrive and green outdoor spaces. This area was once a successful residential community, breathing new life into it will be fantastic for Stockport and enable us to reconnect surrounding communities with the town centre.
“We want this to be a place that’s distinctly Stockport and that celebrates the rich history of the area, so we’ll be out speaking to the local community in the new year to get their feedback. If you live in Stockport, or are thinking about moving, get involved and help us create a place that sets the standard for town centre living.”
In January 2024, local people will be invited to find out more and have their say on an initial draft masterplan via a series of drop-in events, an online Q&A and website. An information leaflet will also be sent to thousands of homes and businesses around the site as part of the engagement process, which is being led by Font Comms. Shedkm are architects on the scheme.
Further updates on the project are to be announced via the Stockport8 website, as well as on Facebook (@Stockport8) and Instagram (@Stockport_8).
