Stockport is gearing up to host the BBC Scam Safe Week roadshow in the Merseyway Shopping Centre on Friday, 29th November.
The event will give residents that chance to meet fraud experts and gain vital knowledge on how to stay safe from scams and fraud ahead of the festive season.
Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from two major high-street banks, Greater Manchester Police’s Fraud Investigation Team, Age UK Manchester, and NASMA (National Association of Student Money Advisers), all of whom will be offering advice on how to stay safe from scams and fraud this winter. Additionally, Stockport Council’s Cost of Living Helpline team will have an information stand and will be on hand to speak to residents about the financial support options that may be available.
The event will be headlined by Nick Stapleton, the popular host of Scam Interceptors. Nick will be at the event until 1pm, answering residents’ questions about scams alongside experts. Live coverage from Merseyway will feature on BBC Morning Live from 10-10.45am and will continue on BBC Radio Manchester, where Joe McGrath will broadcast from 10am – 2pm.
Cllr Jilly Julian, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources at Stockport Council, said:
“Scammers are always on the lookout for opportunities, and sadly, this time of year is no exception. They know people are busy and might let their guard down during the festive season. That’s why events like the BBC Scam Safe roadshow are so important—they give people the knowledge and tools they need to stay one step ahead.
“We know this winter is tough for many, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting so many households. That’s why we’re putting £300k into helping our low income pensioners, and continue to support residents facing the biggest financial struggles. I’d really encourage everyone to pop down to the event. Not only will you learn how to protect yourself from scams, but you’ll also find out about the support available from Stockport Council to help you through these challenging times.”
Victoria Nichol, Centre Manager at Merseyway said:
“We are absolutely delighted to host the BBC Scam Safe Week Roadshow here at Merseyway Shopping Centre. As a hub for the local community, the well-being of Stockport residents is always our top priority and we are committed to supporting initiatives that protect and empower the people in our town. With scams and fraud becoming increasingly sophisticated, this event offers an invaluable opportunity for people to access expert advice and learn how to stay safe.”
