Bank Holiday rail works to effect journeys from Stockport

Rail passengers are being urged to plan their journeys ahead of works over the Late May Bank Holiday weekend on the West Coast Main Line that will effect services through Stockport.

On Sunday 24 May there will be key engineering work taking place on the West Coast Main Line which will mean no trains run between Warrington and Preston. During this time, Avanti West Coast services will divert via Manchester, and as a result, there will be fewer scheduled services between Stockport and London Euston than normal.

With work set to clash with Stockport County’s League One Play-off final at Wembley, football fans are being urged to plan ahead and consider alternative transport if heading to London for the match.

There will only be two trains on Sunday morning that can get County fans to London in time for the 1pm kick-off. Given the estimated number of fans expected to travel, and risks of overcrowding, Avanti are advising supporters to avoid travelling to London on the train. There will, however, be trains available after the match for the return travel to Stockport.

Work being undertaken between Preston and Lancashire is part of a £400 million package of upgrades along the West Coast Main Line that aim to improve reliability and reduce delays on one of Europe’s busiest rail routes.
