Discount supermarket, Aldi, is set to invest nearly £10 million in new and upgraded stores across Greater Manchester over the course of 2023.
£9,964,000 investment by the supermarket chain includes upgrades to existing stores, as well as the development of new stores in Oldham and Chadderton.
As part of Aldi’s expansion in the region, it is currently recruiting for over 400 store roles in Greater Manchester alone, as well expanding its warehousing workforce at the retailer’s Regional Distribution Centre in the city-region.
The investment in Greater Manchester adds to the wider growth of the Aldi chain across the UK. The supermarket is on track to create 6,000 new jobs across the country in its stores, with a further 1,000 positions being recruited for in its 11 Regional Distribution Centres nationwide.
Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer, Aldi UK and Ireland, said:
“We’ve been helping Britain find the best value for money when it comes to their food shop for more than 30 years, and the demand for our low prices is now higher than ever.
“We know however, that there are still areas that don’t have a store, or that need more or larger stores to meet increased customer demand. That’s why our 2023 expansion plans are focused on making sure our award-winning products at unbeatable prices become accessible to even more people.”
From 1 July 2023, starting pay for Aldi Store Assistants will increase to £11.40 per hour nationally and £12.85 within the M25. This is boosted by the fact that Aldi remains the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks, which for the average store colleague will be worth £927 annually.
