There have been more than 3.7 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and more than 100,000 people have died, government figures show. However, these figures include only people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus. More than seven million people – 7,447,199 – have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

In Stockport the infection rate has dropped by 22% to 288.7. The number of cases reached record levels in early January, partly driven by a new variant of the virus thought to be much more easily transmissible than other strains. However daily reported cases, on average, now appear to be declining.

BBC: 4th vaccine set for approval as tests show nearly 90% efficacy
A new coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be 89.3% effective in large-scale UK trials. The Novavax jab, manufactured in England, is the first to show in trials that it is effective against the new virus variant found in the UK. The doses are expected to be delivered in the second half of this year, if approved for use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The UK has secured 60 million doses of the jab, which will be made in Stockton-on-Tees in north-east England.
The UK has so far approved three coronavirus vaccines for emergency use – one from Oxford University and AstraZeneca, another by Pfizer and BioNTech, and a third from drug firm Moderna.
Novavax publishes positive efficacy data for its COVID-19 vaccine
Novavax today published positive data from the UK phase 3 study of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, showing it to be 89.3% effective in preventing coronavirus in participants.
Boohoo in talks to acquire Arcadia brands
Boohoo is in exclusive discussions with the administrators of Arcadia over the acquisition of a trio of well-known brands. In an update to shareholders, the company confirmed reports that it is eyeing a deal for Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Burton.
It noted that such discussions “may or may not result in agreement of a transaction”. “A further announcement will be made when appropriate.” Arcadia called in administrators from Deloitte in December 2020, putting 13,000 jobs at risk. Earlier this month Boohoo announced their intention to buy the Debenhams brand.

Support Scheme for Stockport’s large strategic employers
26th January: Grants of up to £150,000 per business are available, with applications required by 28th February 2021. Businesses will be considered if they are based in Stockport with over 50 employees and have a strategic impact on the local economy (businesses with less than 50 employees will be considered in exceptional circumstances where there is exceptional contribution demonstrated to the economic vibrancy locally). Stockport Council expands eligibility for Discretionary Grant Schemes27th January: Stockport Council has announced it is expanding its discretionary grant schemes to support a greater range of businesses affected by the pandemic.
The support will see businesses outside of the hospitality, leisure and retail sectors become eligible for both the Stockport Additional Restrictions Grant scheme and the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses, affecting organisations that were impacted during the lockdown from 5th November to 2nd December, and subsequent periods of lockdown. Support will be backdated to the first date of eligibility. The discretionary schemes allow councils to support businesses that have missed out on other support as they do not have a business rates liability. Stockport Council is adding a number of sectors to those already eligible for the schemes. Details here To be eligible for the Stockport Additional Restrictions Grant scheme bus also meet specific criteria – details here Businesses will need to be able to demonstrate that they have fixed property costs and demonstrate a loss in income as a result of the pandemic. Some businesses have not been eligible to receive a grant, and this continues to be the case – find out more here
Please note: The Council has not yet received funding for the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses scheme for the period following the end of the lockdown on 2nd December 2020. Once confirmation of funding from central government has been received, Stockport Council will resume accepting applications and making payments. The Council is also working on ways to make repeat payments for eligible businesses to eliminate the need to reapply. If your business has already successfully applied and received payment for either of the discretionary grant schemes, please do not reapply for additional periods of restrictions as this may delay future identification and processing of repeat payments.

BBC: Covid office outbreaks in Lockdown
More than 60 suspected Covid outbreaks in offices were recorded in the first two weeks of the current lockdown in England, a BBC investigation has found.
Under England’s lockdown rules, in force since 6 January, people should work from home if they can. Public Health England figures, obtained via a Freedom of Information request, suggests offices have had more outbreaks compared to other workplaces. The government has urged firms to help employees work from home.
It said it has worked with trade unions, businesses and medical experts to produce “comprehensive guidance” to help firms that are permitted to stay open and it has introduced rapid testing of employees.

Construction Covid-19 wage support nears £15bn
Government pay-outs to support self-employed and furloughed construction workers soared to nearly £15bn last year. Despite numbers of furloughed workers falling sharply in October, the total amount paid out under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme continued to slowly climb to £6.93bn by the end of December. Furloughing peaked on 14 April with 723,600 staff on the scheme, falling to 130,700 at 31 October. This figure edged up to reach 169,700 at the end of November. Provisional estimates show that at the end of December the number of construction staff furloughs had risen again to 193,400 as the lockdown began to hit.

On the move: 1.8m over 55s downsized amidst pandemic
The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have caused many people to reconsider both how and where they live. The research shows that many over-55s are making new plans about the homes they would like to live in as they get older and plan to make home moves soon. Additionally, 25% of over-55s considering downsizing are aiming to do so in the next 12 months and that figure jumps to 54% within the next two years. In separate research carried out by Audley in 2019, just 6% of over-55s who were still living in their family home thought they would move home in the next one to two years, highlighting a potential shift in mindset from the older generation.
Winter market surge not enough to prevent new build slump
Covid-19 has caused the number of new homes registered by UK house builders to fall 23 per cent in 2020. The NHBC trade body and insurance provider says this slump comes despite a surge in late 2020 as the market came back to life.
NHBC registered 123,151 new homes in 2020, compared to 160,319 in 2019.
The largest falls were in the second quarter of last year as the initial lockdown halted work on site. House building activity rebounded quickly after builders established Covid-secure working practices in the summer, with a total of 39,749 new homes being registered in the final quarter, 34 per cent up on the third quarter.
