The UK Government has announced up to £20 million over the next decade for 25 communities, with Brinnington among the areas to benefit from the investment.
The new funding for ‘trailblazer neighbourhoods’ was announced as part of the Chancellor’s Spending Review on 11th June, and aims to enable long-term community-led investment in more deprived or under-supported areas.
Brinnington in Stockport is one of three Greater Manchester areas to benefit from the government investment, alongsiside Pendleton in Salford, and the Benchill South and Wythenshawe Central area of Manchester.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) will work with partners from across the regeneration and community sectors to help crowd in investment and provide a direct link to Whitehall. Funding over the next decade will support communities to drive forward the changes they want to see in their neighbourhoods. It will support improvements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion.?
Responding to the announcement, Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“We welcome the announcement that Brinnington has been named one of the government’s Trailblazer neighbourhoods, set to receive up to £20 million in long-term investment. This funding presents a significant opportunity to deliver meaningful improvements for local residents.
“From the government’s commitment to extend Metrolink in Stockport, to the new railway station planned for Cheadle and the community hub underway in Marple, we’re seeing real progress being made right across the borough.
“We look forward to seeing the full details from government and will work closely with local residents and partners to ensure this investment delivers real and lasting benefits for the Brinnington community.”
