There have been over 4.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and nearly 128,000 people have died. 8 new Covid-related death were announced in the UK yesterday, Sunday. Over 70 million vaccine doses have been received across the UK and over 41.5 million people have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine – 76% of all adults.
Nearly 30 million people have had both their first and second jab, 55.4% of all adults.
People aged 25 and over are being invited to have a first jab and the focus has shifted to offer a second vaccine within 8 weeks rather than 12. The average number of daily infections in the UK is rising in some areas, fuelled by the Indian variant, with 7,490 new cases announced by the government yesterday, Wednesday.
The R value and growth rate in England

BBC: Easing of lockdown delayed by 4 weeks
Most coronavirus rules will remain in place in England for another four weeks after the planned 21 June unlocking, government sources have told the BBC.
Senior ministers have signed off on the decision to delay the lifting of all legal restrictions on social contact. That could mean capacity limits for sports, pubs and cinemas will remain, and nightclubs would stay closed. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to confirm the delay later at a news conference. The extension will be put to a Commons vote this month and could trigger a sizeable Conservative backbench rebellion.
Night Time Industries Association would “aggressively” challenge extension to lockdown
The night-time economy sector has vowed to “aggressively” challenge the Government if it delays the country’s final unlocking from pandemic restrictions on June 21. With the ‘Indian variant’ of coronavirus driving a rise in infections there are fears the Prime Minister might extend the final unlocking further. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), which includes Greater Manchester Night Time Economy Adviser, Sacha Lord, says further delays would be catastrophic for the sector, leaving many businesses on a financial cliff edge.
GDP rises at fastest rate since July 2020
The UK economy experienced its fastest monthly growth since July 2020 in April, the Office for National Statistics has said. GDP (gross domestic product) is estimated to have risen by about 2.3 per cent during the month. The service sector grew by 3.4 per cent, with consumer-facing services re-opening in line with the easing of coronavirus restrictions and more pupils returning to onsite lessons, but output in the production sector fell by 1.3 per cent as three of the four sectors contracted.
Ted Baker reveals plans to open 10 new stores despite fall in revenues
The high street fashion brand has announced that it will open 10 new stores this year despite reporting that its revenues decreased by nearly half in 2020. Ted Baker, which has stores across the UK, has seen group revenue drop by 44.2 per cent since January 2020, falling from £630.5m to £352m over the course of the year.
The company said that this was a result of the impact of the pandemic, which also affected its profits, with losses reaching £107.7m. This comes after the company’s launch of a new restructuring plan last year, which it now says has resulted in £31m of annualised payroll savings. However, it said that it has strengthened its brand across the year, with a larger active customer base and plans to open 10 new stores in 2021.
Government unveils multi-million-pound plans to drive recovery of UK tourism sector The government has today unveiled plans to support the recovery of the UK’s tourism industry. Plans include a £10m voucher scheme launched by The National Lottery this autumn to encourage trips beyond the peak summer season. In addition, a rail pass for ‘staycationers’ will be launched later this year, aiming to make it easier and more sustainable for domestic tourists to get around the country.
£30m government funding to support training for STEM and manufacturing sectors The government has today announced multi-million-pound funding to support the STEM and manufacturing industries through education and training.
The funding will include a new £18m Growth Fund to support further and higher education providers to expand Higher Technical Education. In addition, up to £10m has been earmarked for Institutes of Technology to develop and deliver higher technical short and modular courses in STEM disciplines. Finally, £2m will be used to support the development and delivery of modular training focused on upskilling employees to help address future skills gaps in high value manufacturing.

North West sees strongest growth in 24 years
The North-West saw its strongest growth in business activity in over 24 years last month thanks to Covid restrictions being eased and a pic- up in market demand. According to the latest NatWest PMI report, there was a record build-up of backlogs spurring accelerated job creation, with strong growth recorded across both manufacturing and services. The PMI figures track the monthly change in the output of goods and services across the private sector. Any figure over 50 shows growth, with higher figures signalling faster expansion. That figure for the North-West rose from 59.7 in April to an all-time high of 66.4 in May, also the highest reading among the 12 UK regions monitored by the survey. The good news came despite cost pressures facing the region’s businesses continuing to build, which resulted in a record increase in goods and services prices.

A new report published by the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (GMLEP) has revealed how the city-region has become a global hub new tech and ecommerce businesses. In How Greater Manchester became the land of tech unicorns and eCommerce giants, the GMLEP have outlined how the city-region has transformed over the years from an industrial city and birthplace of the Industrial Revolution into becoming a place where economic growth is driven by creativity, technology and innovation.
Director of Public Health warns of rising Covid-19 cases in under-30s in Stockport
A sharp rise in Covid-19 case numbers in Stockport in recent days is largely being driven by spread amongst those aged 10-30, the majority of which remain currently ineligible for vaccination, the borough’s Director of Public Health has warned.In her weekly coronavirus statement, Jennifer Connolly warned that the Delta variant that accounts for 95% of cases in the borough is more transmissible and more likely to lead to hospitalisation, even amongst younger people who have been less susceptible to Covid-19, compared to previous virus variants.

Renting now cheaper than buying, according to recent research
It is now cheaper to rent a home than buy one – the first time this has been the case since late 2014. An analysis by the Connells-owned Hamptons agency says that in May the average tenant in Britain spent £71 per month less in rent than if they were servicing the repayments on a 90 per cent loan-to-value mortgage on the same home. This means they would have spent a monthly average of £1,054 on rent compared to £1,125 on mortgage repayments. This is a switch-around to the position just before the pandemic. In March 2020 a buyer with a 10 per cent deposit would have been £102 per month better off buying.

Stockport Council details of Government’s Restart Grant
The Restart Grant scheme supports businesses in the non-essential retail, hospitality, leisure, personal care and accommodation sectors with a one-off grant, to reopen safely as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
Applications close on 30 June 2021
The Restart Grant will be split into two strands:
– Strand one will be for non-essential retail businesses that may be entitled to a one-off cash grant of up to £6,000.
– Strand two will be for hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym businesses that may be entitled to a one-off cash grant of up to £18,000.
Strand 1 Businesses that have a rateable value:
- of £15,000 or less on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £2,667
- between £15,001 and £50,999 on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £4,000
- of £51,000 or more on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £6,000
Strand 2 Businesses that have a rateable value:
- of £15,000 or less on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £8,000
- between £15,001 and £50,999 on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £12,000
- of £51,000 or more on 1 April 2021 will receive a payment of £18,000

Coronavirus Roadmap out of lockdown – what and when?
From 29 March:
- People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the “rule of six”, including in private gardens
- The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible
- Outdoor sport facilities will reopen, including golf courses and tennis and basketball courts, and formally organised outdoor sports can restart
- Weddings attended by up to six people can take place in any circumstances
Stage two (no earlier than 12 April):
- All shops allowed to open, along with close-contact services, including hairdressers and beauty salons (including in people’s homes)
- Restaurants and pubs allowed to serve food and alcohol to customers sitting outdoors Gyms and spas can reopen, as can zoos, theme parks, libraries and community centres
- Members of the same household can take a holiday in the UK in self-contained accommodation
- Weddings attended by up to 15 people can take place
Stage three (no earlier than 17 May):
- People can meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors
- Six people or two households can meet indoors
- Pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues can seat customers indoors
- Up to 30 people can attend weddings or other life events, like christenings
- Remaining outdoor entertainment, such as outdoor theatres and cinemas can open
- Indoor entertainment such as museums, theatres, cinemas and children’s play areas can open
- Performances and large events can restart, but with limits on audience numbers
- Hotels, hostels and B&Bs can reopen
- International leisure travel may resume
- Adult indoor group sports and exercise classes can restart
Stage four (no earlier than 21 June):
- All legal limits on social contact will be removed
- No legal limits on the number of people who can attend weddings, funerals and other life events
- Nightclubs will be allowed to reopen

Repayment period for Bounce Back Loans extended to ten years
Businesses that took out government Bounce Back loans to help them through the Coronavirus crisis now have more time to repay. Companies will be contacted with options to extend the length of the loan from six to 10 years as part of a new ‘pay-as-you-grow’ initiative. The new proposals give businesses three new options:
- Extending the length of the loan from six years to 10;
- Making interest-only payments for six months, then repaying the principal on a phased basis with other interest-only periods;
- Delaying repayments entirely for up to six months.
