HEADLINES & UPDATES:
UK to donate over 100 million surplus vaccine doses
Boris Johnson says the UK will start donating coronavirus vaccines to poorer countries in the next few weeks. More than 100 million surplus doses will be delivered in the next year, he announced ahead of the G7 summit.
US President Joe Biden has promised half a billion doses of Pfizer vaccines to 92 low and middle-income countries and the African Union. Five million doses will be given from the UK by the end of September, with 25 million more by the end of the year.
The UK economy grew 2.3% in April, its fastest monthly growth since July last year.
Higher spending has helped the economy grow. Shoppers spent more on the High Street as non-essential shops reopened, and people bought more cars and caravans. There was also more spending in pubs, cafes and restaurants as restrictions eased the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. Despite the surge in activity, the UK economy is still 3.7% below its pre-pandemic peak. Construction fell in April compared to strong growth the previous month. But Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that the figures were “a promising sign that our economy is beginning to recover”.

Consultation for Transport for the North launches first Decarbonisation strategy
The strategy for the North of England, setting out the ambitious target of near-zero carbon emissions from surface transport by 2045, has gone out to public consultation. People and businesses from across the North are urged to have their say on the plan, with consultation open until 31 August 2021. It is the first time a regional strategy of this type has been produced, bringing together the region’s leaders to speak out with one voice on the climate emergency.
The strategy, developed by Transport for the North (TfN), sets out why a regional near-zero carbon surface transport network must be achieved to help address climate change. It highlights the ambitions of the North of England in tackling carbon emissions, with the region aiming to go beyond national policy and meet targets much sooner. It also demonstrates the importance of maximising clean growth opportunities; the need to ensure decarbonisation is at the heart of transport-related policy and investment decisions; and why coordination at a regional level will provide the best outcomes.
