Work to begin on £33.6 million A34 Corridor improvements

Work is set to begin in April on the £33.6 million package of improvements to connectivity and active transport infrastructure along the A34 Corridor through Stockport.

The UK government approved funding for Stockport Council’s plans for the route in Autumn 2023, with the project set to create new opportunities for clean, active travel for our residents and businesses in communities along the A34 in the borough.

Contractors will start work on the first two schemes on Tuesday, April 2, near Gatley Road and Broadway.

These improvements are part of the wider scheme that will also deliver improved access to the Cheadle Royal Business Park, the Stanley Green business area, a designated walking and cycling route along the A34 and include a new pedestrian subway for pupils and staff at Kingsway School.

Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said:

“The A34 is a vital route in the borough, and this scheme will bring a host of benefits to not only the A34 corridor, but Stockport as a whole.

“It’s great that we can announce that work has started on the first two schemes that make up the wider project.

“Work will be completed in phases, but we would appreciate residents bearing with us while these works take place to create a scheme that will help to encourage active travel by encouraging and enabling our residents to make healthier choices when they travel around our borough, as well as for those that need to use a car.”

The council will be minimising the amount of carbon used during the construction process as well trying to improve biodiversity by planting new trees and improving habitats along the route.
