Stockport Council have submitted a planning application to refurbish the former Winters building and change its designation of the building for use as a restaurant or café.
The listed building on Little Underbank was originally Winter’s Jeweller. Its iconic 19th Century clock and figurines of a soldier, sailor and Father Time are considered to be of significant historical interest. Stockport Council, who own the building, plan to protect the building’s period features, including the unique exterior and shopfront, but also its Edwardian timber staircase.
The council also propose returning the interior layout to its original design, which had been altered when the Winters building was used as a wine bar by Joseph Holt Brewery. The council also plan to make necessary repairs to the exterior to preserve the historic building for the future, including reroofing and improving rainwater drainage.
No proposed occupant for the restaurant has been named. A fine dining restaurant had been planned for the Winters building in 2018, but failed to generate the necessary funding to open, and plans were mothballed.
The 1,200 square foot building has now been vacant since January 2018.
Donald Insall Associates in Chester are the architects on the renovation, and are specialists in working with historic and listed buildings. Should planning be approved, Stockport Council expect works to be completed by the end of 2020.
