Work is set to begin at the end of April on essential works to improve safety on the Wellington Road bridge, where the A6 crosses over the M60, in Stockport town centre.
Improvement works will replace the existing barrier on both sides of the bridge with a new 1.8 m steel replacements. The work aims to improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and road users crossing the bridge.
The project is being delivered by National Highways (formerly Highways England), who manage and maintain major roads and motorways across England. Work is expected to be undertaken in three phases, beginning on 26th April, with work set to complete at the end of July 2022.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the Wellington Road bridge will be maintained throughout the works, however, some closures to the A6, M60 and A560 will be required. Subeyda Fiqow, National Highways assistant project manager, explained:
“Those who use Wellington Road bridge will benefit from these essential safety improvements. Access for cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained throughout the project.
“At times we will need to close the M60, the A560 and the A6 Wellington Road to road users to ensure the work is carried out safely, however we aim to minimise disruption by doing it in phases and putting clearly-signed diversions in place. I want to thank people for their patience while we work to create safer journeys.”
The A6 Wellington Road (between Heaton Lane and A5145) will be closed to motorists throughout the work between 9pm and 5am (extended to 7am on weekends) to carry out construction safely. The M60 and the A560 Great Egerton Street will also be temporarily closed so that scaffolding and the work site area can be set up safely.
Signed diversion routes will be in place to ensure journeys are maintained, and National Highways will be working with other projects in the area to ensure all work is coordinated to minimise disruption to the public.
