Throughout October, Johnny Shepherd, one of the people that Stockport charity Supportability supports, is walking over three miles a day to raise money for the charity, around 100 miles in total.
Johnny, who loves to walk and walks every day, will be raising money so the charity can buy a new games console for their Day Centre.
Supportability is based in Stockport and supports children, young people and adults with a wide range of complex physical and learning disabilities.
A new games console will allow the people they support to have access to technology. A lot of the people they support have games consoles at home so they can share their skills with others at the Day Centre; and increase their social skills. It will mean that they will have access to physical games such as bowling or tennis, and mental games such as quizzes.
Johnny loves to sing and dance, and he chose ‘Let’s Sing 2023’, and ‘Just Dance 2024’ in particular for the Xbox One, so he will be able to have lots of fun singing and dancing with his friends in the Day Centre.
Access to a games console for the people Supportability works with will enhance their wellbeing and gain more skills. Dawn Cameron, Day Opportunities Manager, explained:
“Johnny is taking on the task of walking 100 miles in October to raise money for a games console for his friends who access the Day Opportunities at Supportability.
“Gaming has significant benefits for people with disabilities, these include improved wellbeing by creating social connections, enhanced motor skills, improved creativity, better cognitive abilities and problem solving.
“Raising this money also provides Johnny with the opportunity to make an important contribution to his friends at Supportability which creates a sense of achievement and has a positive impact on his confidence.
“Please join us in supporting Johnny with his important challenge.”
