Pupils at a Stockport Primary School are set to benefit from additional resources encouraging them to walk to school.
St Marys CE Primary School in Reddish has received class packs of incentives to inspire children to walk to school. These include passports, badges for walking to school and resources to record their achievements, plus a banner to display outside the school.
The resources have been provided by Living Streets, a national charity working with Stockport Council.
The Headteacher at St Marys CE Primary School, Liz Irvin, said: “We are delighted that the school was chosen to receive these resources which will help encourage even more pupils to walk to school. The school takes a very pro-active approach towards sustainable travel to school.”
The school has done the following:
- Improved the facilities for pupils to be able to scoot to school by installing scooter storage in the playground
- Set up a special school council group of pupils who have worked closely with the Council’s Road Safety team to encourage more children to walk to school
- Pupils involved in ‘Operation Eagle Eye’ – this initiative involves pupils collecting information about driver behaviour outside the school
Councillor Iain Roberts, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development & Regeneration, said:
“Incorporating walking into our daily journeys brings great benefits for individuals and Stockport as a whole. I would like to congratulate the school on all their initiatives they have adopted to encourage pupils to walk to school.”

Jason Clarke, Retail Area Director for Barclays in Manchester, said:
“As part of an energy saving initiative across all UK Barclays branches that sees some of the savings converted into charitable donations for local projects, employees at our branches in Manchester have chosen to support the Walk to School campaign which helps to create sustainable and healthy futures for our children. I am delighted St Mary’s CE Primary School in Stockport will benefit from our donation as this has meant the children received Living Streets classroom packs in support of their Walk to School Week.”
