Stockport residents are being given the chance to choose the name of the new town centre park, currently under construction on the roof of Stockport’s new transport interchange.
The new two-acre park will open in Spring 2024 as part of the construction of a state-of-the-art bus terminus for Stockport town centre. The multi-million pound development also includes a 196-home apartment block, delivered in partnership with CityRise, as well as a new walking and cycling link to the railway station.

Stopfordians are being given the chance to pick their favourite of three potential names for the park at voting stations in the town centre. Three shortlisted names have been chose following focus sessions with local community organisations: Arches Park, Viaduct Park, or The Overbank. Residents can back their favourite by placing a token for their preferred option at a voting station in Merseyway’s covered mall, or at Market Hall before Friday 5th January.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“The new park will be a fantastic space in the heart of our town centre, and one which everyone will be able to enjoy.
“We’ve got some fantastic events planned for the year once it is open, which will really boost our status as Town of Culture, and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the space and what it has to offer.”
Work has been progressing quickly on-site at the town’s newest greenspace, with turf being laid and planting taking place.
The park will help to connect neighbourhoods and communities and be a greenspace that residents from all over the borough can enjoy. It will feature a new walking and cycling link to the railway station, play equipment, festoon lighting and an events pavilion.
