From October the familiar Cheshire Building Society name will disappear from our high streets as the brand name is being dropped by the Nationwide Building Society, which stepped in to rescue the former society during the financial crisis in 2008.
Since then the Nationwide has operated behind the Cheshire name, leaving the Stockport based Vernon Building Society as the only building society based in Cheshire.
Chief Executive of the Vernon, Mike Hanson, said:
“The Vernon is thriving as an independent society. We remain committed to serving the area through our branch network and this commitment has been recognised by local people as is shown by our continued growth in customer numbers. As a mutual building society we exist solely for the benefit of our members rather than to make a profit for shareholders and this allows us to pay them better interest rates.”
Vernon – 90 years young!
Vernon Building Society first opened in 1924 and has branches throughout Stockport and in Poynton. They offer savings, mortgage and insurance products to customers in the area and regularly support the local community through their Jubilee Fund and charity events throughout the year.
