Vernon Building Society was awarded ‘The Stockport Award’ at the Stockport Business Awards, held at Edgeley Park on 5th October in recognition of its work in the borough.
Celebrating businesses who demonstrate a real passion and act as an advocate for the borough, the Stockport Award was a closely fought category at the lively and well attended black tie ceremony filled with businesses from across Stockport.
Vernon Building Society has been helping the people of Stockport buy their homes and grow their savings for 99 years. They are part of the fabric of the borough, supporting the community, local businesses and helping local not-for-profit groups through their network of six high street branches in Bramhall, Poynton, Marple, Hazel Grove, Stockport and Reddish.
Steve Fletcher, Chief Executive at Vernon, said:
“We are delighted to be awarded The Stockport Award and have our dedication and support for the borough recognised by businesses across the region. The award is a great testament to all the hard work the Vernon team do day in and day out to better serve the people of Stockport. We exist to help our Members flourish and our local community thrive, and I couldn’t be prouder of our team, our Members and Stockport in the run up to our centenary year.”
Helping first-time buyers, home-movers, home-builders and students, the Vernon supports the people of Greater Manchester to purchase their home, even if their circumstances are unique. Taking time to get to understand the person and individually underwrite their mortgage offer.
The Vernon prides itself on service, personally answering the phone and ensuring that Members benefit from their best product for them. Unlike big banks, Vernon Building Society is not answerable to shareholders. All profits are used for the benefit of Members, the community it serves and to support Stockport’s future growth and long-term sustainability.
As a local employer of choice, Vernon’s 80-strong team can dedicate two-days a year volunteering to Stockport’s great causes.
Annually, the Vernon awards £12,000 via its Community Stars programme, which gives back to Stockport’s grass roots not-for-profits including The Wellspring Stockport, Mentell.org and Walthew House.
Committed to its local community and remaining accessible on the high street, the Vernon has invested to refurbish half of its branch network this year, and is plans to finish in 2024. They have maintained a 98% Customer Satisfaction rating.
This is not Vernon’s first win at the Stockport Business Awards. They won the Employer of the Year award in 2022 and the Most Responsible Business Award in 2019.
