In the latest figures published this week, UK unemployment fell in the quarter to August by 154,000 to under 2 million nationally, the largest fall in unemployment since records began. In the last twelve months unemployment dropped by 538,000 – the largest annual fall on record.
This drop was also echoed in Stockport where in the parliamentary constituency of Hazel Grove numbers also fell, according to local MP Andrew Stunell and Lisa Smart:
“Unemployment has dropped by 330 in the last year, and our constituency rate is down to just 2.3%. That is fantastic news and I am delighted that our huge investment in apprenticeships, and the raising of the income tax threshold to £10,000 are helping to boost these figures.
“The most impressive thing is that youth unemployment across our area has been cut in half since the General Election and is now at 4.1%.”
