Young Enterprise is the United Kingdom’s largest business and enterprise education charity. Every year they help 225,000 young people learn about business and the world of work in 5,000 schools, colleges and universities under the guidance of volunteers from 3,500 companies.
Students from 11 Greater Manchester secondary schools took part in the charity’s County Finals at The Trafford Centre on 8th May after taking part in a Young Enterprise scheme to set and run their own businesses for a year with the help of business mentors.
After a grilling by judges it was students from Bramhall High School who scooped the coveted top prize of ‘Best Company, Greater Manchester” for their business ByDesign which has made a unique transition pack for parents and children moving between primary and secondary schools.
Other winning teams of students made off with prizes for ‘Best customer Service’ ‘Best Company Report,’ ‘Best Trade Stand,’ ‘Best Presentation,’ and the “Sustainability in Business” award.
Eira Guest Regional Manager for the North West said:
“We have seen some incredible talent on display from all of the students in the Greater Manchester area this year. The judges were incredibly impressed with the products and services they had developed and the presentations they gave at the Awards especially with the amazing Trafford Centre backdrop!”
“The Awards really highlights how the Young Enterprise Company Programme can inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and help them develop practical business skills while they are still at school. It is amazingly positive for Greater Manchester that so many young people are involved in this programme”
Alison Reid, Community Development Manger, Intu Trafford Centre who presented the Overall winners award said “The competition was fierce and what was more impressive was that the young people were so professional and comfortable talking about their businesses having spent the last 9 months developing them. . I particularly want to congratulate the students from Bramhall High School who were the overall winners, but all of the teams who made it through o represent their boroughs did themselves and their respective schools proud.”
Other teams winning recognition at the event for their achievements were Bolton Muslim Girls school, Philips High School ( Bury) and Manchester Grammar school. The overall winning company form Bramhall High School will now go forward on to represent Greater Manchester against the rest of the region in the next stage of the competition – the North West Regional Finals at the Concorde Suite at Manchester Airport on Monday 17th June.
