Specialist lender Together has revealed one of its directors will be taking on the Marathon des Sables – described by the Discovery Channel, as the toughest footrace on Earth, in aid of charity.
The Cheadle-based company has a strong commitment to charity and community and shared details of its expansive ‘Let’s Make it Count’ initiative with Marketing Stockport members last month, so this is another great example of its principles in practice.
Daniel Owen-Parr, commercial sales director at Cheadle-based Together will tackle the Marathon Des Sables (MdS) in April in an attempt to raise £8,000 for Hope for Children.
Marathon des Sables is a truly gruelling multi-stage adventure in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments – the Sahara desert. The week-long race, which includes just one rest day, sees entrants run 156 miles in six days, with the longest day consisting of 52 miles.
Whilst temperatures reach more than 50 degrees, runners have to be self-sufficient and carry all their food, drink and equipment
for the week on their back. Even water is rationed and if the ration is exceeded, entrants will incur a time penalty.
Daniel Owen-Parr, commercial sales director, said:
“This is by far the hardest challenge I have ever set myself and it will test me to my absolute limits. I have been preparing for the challenge over the last six months and have run over 1,000 miles in training. Although it’s going to be extremely tough, I’m excited about getting underway and my colleagues have been really supportive.”
Last year, Together raised more than £125,000 for charitable causes, supporting a wide variety of charities including Children in Need, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Seashell Trust, Once Upon a Smile, Destination Florida and St Ann’s Hospice, through its ‘Let’s get giving’ fundraising efforts. This year, its nominated charities will be The Christie and Manchester Mind, with a host of fundraising activities planned.
Together’s ‘Let’s make it count’ initiative spans charity, community and the environment.
