Stockport residents have three more weeks to have their say on facilities they would like to see in a town centre park that will be built atop the new bus interchange.
Work on construction of the new bus interchange began at the end of August, with work set to complete in 2023. Plans for the site include a new town centre park that will sit on the transport hub’s rooftop, adding new green space into the town centre and connecting the bus interchange and walking route to the train station with the A6.
A new website was launched at the start of August to allow the public to engage with and inform the design for the park, and share how they would like to use the space, such as for children’s play, events and pop-ups, festivals or community garden projects.
While some aspects of the town centre park will be fixed for structural reasons, features and facilities will be informed by the consultation process.
The engagement site is open until October 13th – so the clock is ticking for you to have your say.
The park is set to be a part of Stockport’s wider regeneration strategy, and it is hoped it will be enjoyed by everyone living in, working or visiting the borough. It will be accessible from the A6, by lifts to the bus interchange below and via a new pedestrian and cycle bridge to Stockport Railway Stations. Plans for Stockport Interchange also include an apartment scheme and a number of retail and café units.
Cllr David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said:
“We’ve had some great feedback from residents so far, but we want to ensure their voice is heard and as many people as possible play a role in shaping the Interchange Park.
“There’s four weeks to go for residents to let us know what they want to see in their new town centre green space.
“Whether it’s more plants and flowers or safe and well-lit places to sit and relax – make sure you log your views using our engagement portal. Your views will directly influence the final design of the park!”
Work on construction of the new bus interchange has now begun, with the bus station operating out of its temporary base at Heaton Lane Car Park until work is complete.
