The Union Inn, Reddish, has re-opened to the public following a £40,000 refurbishment. The project, funded by Robinsons Brewery and licensee Graham Crowther, continues a landmark year for the Stockport brewer in which over 40 pubs within their 330-strong estate will be refurbished.
“The pub, whilst having a certain charisma, was starting to show its age” said Business Development Manager, Tony Massey.
“The pub is over 100 years old and we felt that it was time to give the bar area a tasteful update whilst maintaining the charm that has made the Union a firm favourite for its regulars.”
Brewery records for the pub state that the plot of land (where the Union now rests) was leased by Samuel Grimshaw, a native of Reddish, on 23rd June 1838. The pub was built and changed hands numerous times over the ensuing 54 years before being purchased by Kay’s Atlas Brewery in May 1892. The pub remained part of Kay’s until it was bought as part of an acquisition by Robinsons in 1929.
“There was no mistaking it for anything other than a working man’s pub” said Graham (left behind the bar). “It’s always been a good home to our regulars but was in need of a lick of paint.”
The brewery design team worked hand-in-hand with Graham to agree on the new vision and ensure that the character of the Union would not be compromised.
The bar area has been upgraded with new signage and timber finish flooring. The walls are adorned with a new bric-a-brac scheme that showcases historic photographs and local stories and new furnishings have been added throughout.
The biggest, and potentially most important improvement, has been the installation of several new flat screen TVs. Known locally for showing live sport, the Union Inn can maintain its presence as a destination venue during the upcoming World Cup.
“The new look really has brought the pub back up to speed” said Tony. “I know that the regulars will be extremely happy to have their pub back. I am looking forward to seeing Graham and his pub continue to flourish!”

“I was always very conscientious that we didn’t turn the pub into something it wasn’t and I am happy with what we have achieved. The place still has the vibe of a good, wholesome, friendly pub and the feedback we have received from our regulars has been unanimously positive. The team and I cannot wait to see what this new chapter will hold for the Union.”
