Stockport cinema, The Light, has submitted plans to see adjacent units in the Redrock leisure complex converted into a new bowling centre for the town.
The Light Cinemas group has sought planning permission for a change of use of three currently unoccupied retail units within the Redrock development next to the group’s existing cinema. The change will allow the cinema to use the space for bowling alleys, accessed from the cinema’s foyer, to bring another dimension to Stockport town centre’s leisure offering.
Plans submitted to the Council in June propose ten lanes of bowling for the unoccupied units 4 and 5 of Redrock, with unit 6 housing arcade games and additional toilet facilities. Access to the centre is proposed to be from an enlarged cinema foyer.
Previously, the Council has previously granted change of use to allow a six-lane bowling alley, but new proposals from The Light Cinemas would enable space for a much larger bowling centre. In its previous decision, Stockport Council cited the challenges of securing tenants for the units for retail and hospitality.
Redrock opened in 2017 and is home to Pizza Express, Zizzi and Berretto Lounge, as well as the Light Cinema and a gym.
In 2020, The Light Cinema celebrated reaching the milestone of one million visitors to its Stockport site since opening in 2017, and opened two additional screens in the town to meet demand.
