Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Travelshops in Stockport and Oldham bus stations have begun taking part in a paperless timetable trial.
Beginning Wednesday 2nd June, traditional paper bus timetables will be replaced with digital QR codes: customers will scan the codes using their smartphones, where they will be directed to accurate and up-to-date information about their chosen route.
The pilot has been brought about by Covid-19 timetable changes as paper timetables have quickly become out of date due to frequent service alterations. The paperless trial will ensure customers always have access to the most current timetable to help passengers plan their journeys on TfGM services ahead of time.
TfGM Customer Director, Stephen Rhodes, said:
While the pandemic and associated government guidance have presented challenges, it has also been an opportunity to reassess how we can best provide information to our customers, as well as a chance to innovate and make use of new technologies.
“The paperless timetable pilot will mean that, as we welcome more people back on to our public transport network, customers can access the most accurate information from our travel shops and bus stations, making their return as smooth and stress-free as possible.
“It will also be a more sustainable method of delivering customer information, substantially reducing paper waste.
“The pilot will be conducted in two locations and customer usage data and anecdotal feedback will be monitored closely throughout the trial in order to gauge success or changes needed before a roll-out to all travel shops is considered.”
During the trial, TfGM representatives at the travelshops in Stockport and Oldham will be on hand to help customers access the new digital timetables during the trial; customers who cannot access the paperless timetables, for example, those who do not have a smartphone, can still get a printed version on request.
The initial pilot will run at Oldham and Stockport Merseyway Travelshops and bus stations, from 2 June until 30 September.
Under current restrictions (Step Three), passengers using public transport must remember to wear a face covering, including at transport hubs and interchanges, and in taxis and private hire vehicles, unless exempt. They should also:
- Keep their distance from other passengers where possible.
- Clean their hands frequently and carry hand sanitiser.
- Use contactless payment if they can.
