Following the reopening of indoor leisure and hospitality on Monday 17th May, TfGM are sharing their advice for Covid-safe travel ahead of the first weekend where people can take advantage of reopened venues.
This weekend will be the first where many venues such as bars and restaurants will be able to welcome people inside. Cinemas, theatres and other indoor similar attractions have also reopened. As a result, TfGM are predicting there will be increased demand on both public transport and Greater Manchester’s roads. Traveller numbers are expected to peak between 8pm and 10pm on Saturday.
For those looking to travel by public transport this weekend for their first evening out since restrictions were eased. TfGM have shared the following guidance to keep themselves and others safe from Covid-19.
- You should make sure you travel safely, plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys.
- If you can, travel during quieter times (between 10am and 3pm, and after 6pm during the week)
- You should consider walking or cycling, particularly for short trips.
- Social distancing guidance remains in place on public transport, so capacity is limited – please check details with the operator before you travel.
- You must wear a face covering, including at transport hubs and interchanges, and in taxis and private hire vehicles, unless you’re?exempt. If you don’t, you may be unable to travel and you could be fined £200.?Read our face coverings guidance.
- Clean your hands frequently and carry hand sanitiser with you.
- Use contactless payment if you can to pay for tickets on public transport.
- If you plan to take a taxi or share a lift with friends, reduce the risk by wearing a face covering and open the windows to let fresh air in.
Employers whose staff and customers may rely on public transport to travel to work this weekend are also encouraged to help them travel safely as much as possible by sharing the latest travel advice. Businesses can find support and guidance as more staff and customers return to the transport network via the TfGM website.
