Sixth-former Katie Huane, who volunteers at Beechwood Cancer Care Centre, is encouraging other teenagers to put something back into their community this Student Volunteering Week.
Katie first came across Beechwood when she was looking for a Stockport cancer charity to support in the Greater Manchester 10k run after her grandad passed away with the disease.
When she and her running partner – Nick Saunders – who were head girl and boy at St Anne’s School in Heaton Chapel at the time – went to present a cheque to Beechwood for £362, she was inspired by the work that they did.
The 17-year-old, who is doing her A-levels at Aquinas College to hopefully go to university to study dentistry, decided to take on a volunteering role with Beechwood working in the Bramhall charity shop on a Saturday morning.
She said: “I enjoy helping out at the charity shop and it is also really good for when I am completing my university applications. I would recommend other young people doing the same, not only to improve their futures but to do something good in the community.
Student Volunteering Week runs until February 28 and is an opportunity to highlight the value and importance of volunteering to young people.
Lorraine Fairclough, volunteering manager for Beechwood, said: “We are always looking for new volunteers and have a variety of opportunities that people can enjoy. It is great to have Katie as a volunteer and we would love to see more students and young people get involved.
“It is a cause that so many people are affected by and whether you want to do it for a personal reason or to help with your future, what is guaranteed is that you will get something out of it while also supporting others.”
