Throughout October and November, Johnny Shepherd, a keen walker and one of the people that Stockport charity Supportability supports, walked 136 miles to raise money to buy a new games console for their Day Centre.
So far, they have raised over £300 but are still accepting donations so they can buy a couple of games as well.
Tracking his weekly mileage with Map My Walk and walking alongside a Support Worker, Johnny ventured across many local spaces including Reddish Vale Country Park, Middlewood Way, the Macclesfield Canal and Stockport town centre.
Supportability is based in Stockport and supports children, young people and adults with a wide range of complex physical and learning disabilities.
A new games console will allow the people they support to have access to technology. They will have access to physical games such as bowling or tennis, and mental games such as quizzes. Gaming has significant benefits for people with disabilities. These include improved wellbeing by creating social connections, enhanced motor skills, improved creativity, better cognitive abilities and problem solving.
Jane Porter, a Support Worker who walked with Johnny on some of his walks, said:
“We’re so proud of Johnny and what he’s achieved. He thoroughly enjoyed his walks and there were lots of fun and laughter. The money raised will go towards something he and his friends in the Day Centre can enjoy together.”
Johnny is now taking a well-earned rest, donations in support of his efforts can be made here so they can make a difference to the lives of the people that Supportability supports.
