Yesterday’s local election results for Stockport have determined that Stockport Council is still in a state of ‘no overall control’ despite the leading Liberal Democrats taking an additional two seats from Labour.
Led by Cllr Mark Hunter, the Lib Dems are now just one seat short of being the majority party taking 31 of 63 seats although they remain the largest party in Stockport Town Hall. Labour now holds 22 seats.
Labour’s Yvonne Guariento lost her Cheadle East & Cheadle Hulme North seat to the Lib Dem’s Mike Newman by 184 votes; and over in Offerton Lib Dem took the seat from Labour, winning by a very narrow margin of just 25 votes.
Speaking in the council chamber after all votes had been counted, Cllr Hunter is quoted by the Manchester Evening News as saying his party had a “good track record in getting things done” in the communities his party represent. He then went on to say that Stockport has “a positive vibe” concluding that “it was a good night for the Lib Dems in Stockport.”
