Stockport’s biggest commercial landlord, Orbit Developments, can see real change happening in Stockport’s town centre.
Research carried among customers who occupy space in the town centre eighteen months ago by Stockport’s biggest commercial landlord, revealed encouraging signs.
Orbit have now repeated the survey and, having already had feedback from two groups, the signs once again are encouraging.
Tony Jones, Managing Director of Orbit Developments explained: “There were some points raised eighteen months ago that are still a work in progress, like the need for more town centre hotels and better restaurants to visit with clients for lunch, but the picture is improving in their eyes.
“The mix of Stockport’s independent retailers and the high street operators in Merseyway came out well, giving a diverse offer which appeals to people.
“There were some other great positives, for example the location of transport infrastructure – train, bus and motorway connections are second to none – and proximity to the airport makes it more convenient than Manchester city centre for several customers.
“It was also recognised that Stockport wins on being better value, with rental levels lower than Manchester.”
However Tony believes there is still work to do. “The scruffy nature of the Underbanks area and notably the vacant White Lion pub was identified as letting the town centre down. Yet there could be huge potential for this area to become similar to Manchester’s successful Northern Quarter.
“Many wondered if things could move a bit more quickly and there was also a call for better communication on plans. Several said they did not know what was happening and by when.
“Overall those surveyed spoke positively about the changes to the town centre and are looking forward to a fresh, renewed environment, but felt the Council could speed up the developments and keep people better informed along the way.”
