The Guardian newspaper has praised Stockport’s independent food, drink and creative businesses in a feature in the paper’s travel section.
Writer Tony Naylor explains how ‘something interesting is happening in Stockport’ in his article, ‘Something special in the air’: new bars, art, music and restaurants are turning heads in Stockport, highlighting the town centre’s growing food and drink scene in a who’s who of independent retailers, bars and restaurants.
The piece also shines a spotlight on Stockport’s increasingly vibrant art, music and cultural scene, and contrasts the town’s thriving independent businesses with Manchester’s more corporate offer, and recommends it as a base to explore the nearby Peak District and Transpennine Trail.
Naylor also gives credit to Stockport Council for its proactive approach to supporting independent businesses to set up in the town centre, particularly in The Underbanks area, and in supporting events such as the recent Art Battle in the Council-owned former Debenhams building, which could become a home for future events until longer term plans for a new hospital on the site can be realised.
