Stockport’s BHS store has now closed. The store in Merseyway had been due to close on Saturday, but was one of a number to shut a week early.
A further 57 stores will be kept open for an extra week or until stock runs out in a last-ditch bid to maximise returns.
In total, 157 stores will close with the loss of 11,000 jobs after the firm announced it was going into administration in April.
Shopworkers trade union Usdaw has called for other retailers to provide employment for the BHS staff losing their jobs.
Usdaw says there are ‘still some very serious questions that need to be answered’ about how the company, opened in 1928 as British Home Stores, has been allowed to disappear from the high street.
Dave Gill, Usdaw National Officer, said: “The 11,000 loyal staff have been totally let down. There remains some very serious questions that need to be answered, by former owners of the business, about how a company with decades of history and experience in retail has now come to this very sorry end.
“In the meantime we are providing the support, advice and representation our members require at this difficult time.”
