Stockport based business WFEL have achieved Bronze and Silver Environmental Business Pledge awards and are set to go for Gold!
Heaton Chapel based WFEL, a world leader in the manufacture, repair and distribution of tactical military and disaster relief bridges for over 39 countries including the UK’s Ministry of Defence, are working with Groundwork despite already being accredited with the internationally recognised IS0 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
WFEL recognise the EBP as a useful scheme to aid their continual improvement as part of their EMS. They also believe the pledge and the support on offer from the delivery partners, Groundwork MSSTT, is a useful way to reduce their energy, water and material usage and the associated cost.
Following a Resource Efficiency Review by a Groundwork MSSTT advisor, over £60,000 worth of cost savings were identified, amounting to 319 Tonnes of CO2 savings.

The initial review identified potential resource reduction measures in a variety of areas. The most notable saving was associated with upgrading the current lighting stock to energy efficient LED’s. Other identified areas include upgrading the old inefficient warm air heating system to a modern system and water savings associated with installing tap aerators, cistern damns and utilizing the roof space for rainwater. If WFEL were to install all of the proposed water saving technologies, they could potentially save 5000m3 of water a year.
After working through the Bronze and Silver requirements, WFEL have identified that they are now better equipped to manage their waste more efficiently. They have also installed energy and water efficient technologies, such as low wattage fluorescent lighting, high speed roller doors and water saving push taps. This shows that even for a large company such as WFEL, who already have an international recognised EMS in place, the EBP scheme helps to further improve efficiencies.
Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport Tameside and Trafford (MSSTT) is an independent Not For Profit organisation that has an aim of “Changing Places, Changing Lives” through a range of initiatives, often with an environmental or sustainability focus.
MSSTT are continuing to work with WFEL to achieve the identified savings and to complete the final EBP stage.
