As Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery prepares to mark its 100th anniversary in October 2025, submissions have opened for local artists and makers to have their work included in a special open exhibition.
This landmark building was built with funds raised by the people of Stockport in honour of the fallen of World War I and now commemorates those who died as a result of subsequent conflicts. As well as its role as a war memorial, the Gallery was built as an inspirational space where people could enjoy beautiful art and crafts and the space has hosted many high-profile exhibitions and activities over the last 100 years.
As part of centenary celebrations, the gallery is looking to recognise Stockport’s creative community with a special Centenary Open Exhibition which will take place between Sunday 22 June and Friday 22 August.
The gallery is inviting artists and makers working in different forms and based throughout Stockport to submit one artwork which they feel represents their best work and justifies inclusion in this landmark exhibition.
Work can be 2D, 3D or in video/digital form and can be put together in a range of media, including paint, drawing, photography, textiles and sculpture. Work should not have been previously exhibited at the Gallery. Artworks will be accepted on a first come, first served basis as space allows and will need to meet exhibition guidelines. Works need to be handed in at the Gallery between Thursday 12th June and Sunday 15th June.
The public will be invited to vote for their favourite artworks and the winners will be announced at 3pm on Saturday 9 August. Cash prizes will be awarded by the Mayor of Stockport. Stockport Art Guild will also be making a special award to an artist between 17 and 25 years old through the Michael Hartley Rose Award.
Submission guidelines can found online here.
