Twenty three children at Bridge Hall Primary School, Adswood will be spending two hours a week with ‘book buddies’ up until Easter. Seventeen ‘buddies’ – first year undergraduates from the University Centre, Stockport – will be working with small groups of children practicing storytelling and book-sharing skills.
Sharron Galley – a degree course tutor at the University Centre – said,
“We hope that this will be exciting and fun for everyone. Our students have chosen story books from our own library or have taken favourite books of theirs and they will be reading them with the children. The emphasis will be very much on reading for enjoyment and to get the fullest meaning from the stories.”
One of the students, Cheryl Henderson said,
“I can’t wait to get started. It is so much better to be learning about children by working with children.”
University Centre Assistant Dean, Amanda Davis, said,
“We hope that this is the beginning of a longer relationship with Bridge Hall. We hope that by Easter all the children – who are 5 and 6 – will have contributed to writing their own stories and making books. We look forward to sharing and reading them with all the children.”
