Stockport Council is marking a successful first year of work on the Stockport Town Centre Access Plan making it easier for everyone to travel in and around Stockport.
The work will bring many benefits for residents, businesses and visitors alike by reducing congestion, improving roads and junctions as well as improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists within Stockport town centre.
The first 12 months of the Stockport town centre access plan has seen many improvements made with new cycle routes across the town centre and attractive, safer walking routes created for pedestrians. Motorists are also benefitting from widened roads and improved junctions, cutting journey times and reducing congestion.
These are just the start of the improvements and work on other projects such as the widening of St Mary’s Way are already underway.
By 2020, £73m will have been invested into making it easier for everyone to travel in and around Stockport. The improvements Stockport’s town centre access plan (TCAP) will bring are an important part of the £1 billion investment programme taking place across Stockport transforming the town and making it an even better place to live, work and visit.
Funded through the Government’s Local Growth Deal, TCAP is arguably the largest scheme of its kind in Greater Manchester at present and will revolutionise travel in Stockport. The improvement works are being undertaken in two phases over the next five years – phase 1 will run until 2017.
Councillor Kate Butler, Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration said “We have an amazing town that has so much on offer for residents, businesses and visitors. We want to make sure that everyone can easily travel in and around Stockport, and the Town Centre Access Plan will make this a reality.
“A lot has been achieved over the past year, and there are many improvements and benefits still to come. Whilst our work is taking place I’d encourage everyone to go online to be kept updated about the works taking place to help plan your journeys.”
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “This is an exciting time for Stockport and there are a number of projects underway, which are all part of the Town Centre Access Plan.
“These projects will help to attract more investment and visitors to Stockport and regenerate the borough.”
