A retrospective art exhibition showcasing the work of artist John Renshaw – who trained and later taught at Stockport College – is set to run at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery from 5 April to 18 May 2025.
This exhibition is presented by the Renshaw family in close partnership with the University of Chester where John was a long serving senior lecturer, Head of Department and Professor Emeritus and hosted by Stockport Council.
Born and raised in Macclesfield, Cheshire, John’s artistic journey began at Stockport College, where his Foundation course played a crucial role in shaping his career ambitions. Inspired and motivated by his tutors, John found the encouragement he needed to pursue his passion for art, later returning as a full-time tutor. Sadly, John now has Alzheimer’s and his family have chosen Stockport to show his work so that he can share his talent and a sample of his quality collection with the public and be present to see how much it is appreciated.
John maintained an active artistic career, prolific in terms of painting and drawing and with a very impressive individual exhibition biography. He is a distinguished figure in the art world and has made significant contributions to the field of painting. His work is characterised by its profound depth, intricate detail, and emotional resonance. This retrospective will feature a diverse array of his paintings, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience His dedication to a consistent and serious production of work. Amongst his many achievements, he was selected for the Royal Academy of Painters Summer Exhibition 2017.
In addition to his remarkable artistic achievements, John dedicated many years to nurturing the next generation of artists through his roles at the University of Chester. As a respected educator, he inspired countless students with his dedication to art and drive for excellence. His influence extends beyond the classroom, as he has played a pivotal role in shaping the creative landscape of the University and the broader community.
Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Community, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said:
“We are delighted to host this special exhibition of John Renshaw’s work. Through his connection with Stockport College, John is remembered fondly by colleagues and former students alike and this is a unique opportunity to see a diverse collection of his work all in one place.”
Anna Lomas, John’s daughter, said:
“Dad’s love of painting, teaching, and talking about art is all consuming. He is immensely proud of his career in this field, and making a difference to those he worked with, and for, along the way is something he cherishes deeply. Now dad has Alzheimer’s. He remembers very little but his passion for art, painting, drawing, and literature is one thing he has not forgotten. We have chosen to show his work now so he can share his love with the public and be present to see how much it is appreciated.”
