Stockport Council has set out plans for how the borough will mark Armed Forces Day on 24th June 2023 and give recognition and thanks to those who have served or continue to serve in the military.
Veterans and serving armed forces personnel are encouraged to attend and join a parade which sets off from St Peters Square at 10.30am – full dress code is not required, but can be worn if preferred.
And from 11am (following the parade) until 4pm, there will be lots of free and low-cost family friendly activities taking place in and around Stockport Market Place for everyone to enjoy. Activities include Stockport County’s pop up goal, live music on the event stage, and free activities for all ages at Stockport Museum.
This Armed Forces Day event – which it is hoped will take place annually – has been organised by the armed forces and veteran community, supported by Stockport Council and other partners who make up the armed forces covenant partnership group. The event has also been sponsored by a number of local businesses.
Stockport Council will also be flying the Armed Forces flag outside the Town Hall on Armed Forces Day (Saturday 24 June).
Cllr Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said:
“Armed Forces Day is fantastic opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the contributions of our Armed Forces in Stockport and beyond.
“Stockport is proud to recognise the achievements of our ex-service personnel and serving armed forces.
“Armed Forces Day gives us all a chance to thank them all and show our appreciation for what they do.”
Amanda Peers, Acting Chair of the Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation (SAFCO), said:
“I am proud to have been able to support members of the Armed Forces Community to bring their vision of a whole town celebration of Armed Forces Day to Stockport, to recognise and acknowledge the valuable contribution and huge sacrifices made by those who serve our country.
“A small group of people have worked really hard over the last 11 months to bring this together to give Stockport’s Armed Forces and Veterans community a day to remember.
“We are all grateful to Stockport Council and partners for their support and also to local businesses and organisations for making this happen through sponsoring the event – I’m sure it will be a great day for the whole of Stockport to celebrate.”
