Stockport Council is supporting National Voter Registration Day, taking place on 5th February, during a UK-wide week of national action (2-8 February) to inspire people to register to vote.
Across the borough over 220,000 residents are now on the electoral register but there are still some people who aren’t registered to vote. To encourage these residents to take action, all households will shortly be receiving a letter to confirm which people living at the address are registered to vote. Anyone missing from that list and who is eligible to vote needs to register using the methods below:
- Take 3 minutes and register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote, or
- To request a paper copy of the form in the post, fill in your details at www.stockport.gov.uk/apply or call 0161 217 6026. Please note: Online requests will be dealt with faster.
Eamonn Boylan, (pictured left) Stockport Council’s Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer, said:
“Lots of people don’t know the full benefits of being registered to vote or that, after recent changes to the law, they have to register to vote individually.
“With National Voter Registration Day taking place on 5 February there’s no better time to raise awareness and make sure that you, and people you know, are on the new electoral register. Being on the register gives you the opportunity to vote, it is proof of your identity and may help when you need credit; whether that’s for a phone contract, to buy a car, or to cover tuition fees. So act now.”
