Stockport is supporting the fifth annual Armed Forces Day this Saturday 29th June and Stockport Town Hall is flying the Armed Forces Flag all this week leading up to Armed Forces Day and over the weekend.
On Friday 28th June, Stockport Council will officially re-open the
refurbished Stockport Air Raid Shelters, a warren of tunnels that
provided shelter and a way of life for families in and around
Stockport through the dark days of the Blitz.
The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Chris Murphy, who is
attending the re-opening, said:
“Stockport is very proud to be supporting UK Armed Forces Day
which raises public awareness of the huge contribution made to
our country by the men and women who serve, and have served, in the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces community includes serving troops from the Mercian Regiment, which paraded through the borough earlier this month, as well as service families, veterans and cadets.”
The national event will be held in Nottingham.
