Stockport residents from Offerton, Romiley and Cheadle will be amongst the first people in Stockport to become Carbon Literate, as part of Groundwork’s ‘Sustainable Living in Stockport’ project.
After spending a glorious sunny day visiting low carbon projects across Greater Manchester with some of the Groundwork team, the residents came back buzzing with ideas and inspiration to get their projects started in their local area.
Tours included the Tree Station, Moss Side Community Allotment and Hulme Garden Centre with each organisation sharing their experiences and achievements in working to make Greater Manchester a more sustainable place to live, work and play.
At the Tree Station participants could see how resources are maximised at every scale including how fuel for Stockport Homes’ biomass boilers is generated from locally felled timber and how beautiful furniture is created from local coppice.
Dial Park Allotment Association are aiming to install a composting toilet following their visit to Hulme Garden Centre. Offerton Community Allotment wish to capture rain water at their site and develop an area for children similar to that at Moss Side Community Allotment. Even the low carbon lunch was locally sourced, organic and homemade. Course participants also had the chance to find out about other groups and activities that are helping to create sustainable future for Stockport.
Friends of Tansghutt Fields are set to become the first Carbon Literate Group in Stockport.
Sustainable Living in Stockport is a programme set up to enable local people to make projects happen that will help to reduce our negative impact on the environment and improve the quality of life for Stockport residents in the future.
